Simon Cowell says that the chart success of Canadian acts such as Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen inspired him to meet with CTV executives in the hopes of creating a Canadian version of his popular singing competition The X Factor.

“Look at what’s happened in the charts in the last ten years, all the Canadian talent; you’d be crazy not to try something,” the media mogul said Tuesday afternoon at CTV’s headquarters.

Cowell flew to Toronto late Monday night between auditions for the upcoming season of the American X Factor to discuss the possibility with network executives.

“What we’ve been talking about today is putting together a judging panel that can actually do the job they’re being paid to do: find the diamond in the ruff, change that person’s style of music to what he/she/they should be doing and creating a star because, for me, that’s how I determine the success of these shows,” he explained.

The man behind the Idol and Got Talent franchises added that he personally felt let down by some of the previous international incarnations of his series, including the cancelled Canadian Idol, which he claimed “looked like a bad pastiche of what we were doing in the States.”

“Everyone’s gotten into a habit of saying we need the cute girl, the ditzy girl, dick (me!), and one other and it’s a formula and you can’t run a business like that,” Cowell continued, stating that he would personally finance the show if the right deal could be put in place. .

“I would be the first to come here and say to all of the Canadians who want to enter, ‘Look, forget the past, we’re going to do it a slightly different way. I’m going to back you here, financially, because I believe that we can find a star,” he swore. “There has to be somebody listening to this who is that somebody, I have to believe that.”

However, asked if he’d be willing to step into the judge’s seat, Cowell demurred.

“I can’t do two [X Factors],” he laughed, though he granted that he would “maybe make an appearance.”
